Rise and Shine A Success!

What a challenging time it has been in the office of Pink Hibiscus® for the past 6 or so weeks! Rise and Shine fever took over and with the fabulously generous assistance from Liz Taylor, we were able to pull off a marvelous event that is still on all the guests' lips.

We raised $8000 for the Clare Oliver Melanoma Fund and The Cancer Council NSW which is no mean feat given the short turn around time and limited numbers attending...the bookings have already started coming in for next year though so...we shall see!!

The line up of performers was second to none with Miss World Australia, Caroline Pemberton as the host, and Jade MacRae performing numbers from her new album ‘Get Me Out Of Here'. Leave It To Diva as Kath and Kim got  the ‘foxy' audience involved before hot new country artist Travis Collins entertained the socks off the venue with hits from his new album ‘No Boundaries'. The audience were      enchanted by the dazzling belly dancer, Josefina Daley and the ‘Dame' was in the house with Neil Hansen getting everyone in hysterics before the mood got serious and bidding began on “The Prizes Money Can't Buy” Auction hosted by John Gibbs of Manly Warringah and 2UE Fame. That man is amazing to watch - he commanded the room and helped us to raise almost $3600 from that section alone!!

Late entrant into our fabulous line up was the hot new Aussie band, Inakin. They are managed by Delta Goodrem's mum Lea and are releasing their debut album early next year. Our guests got to groove to their songs before anyone else has heard them and many hearts were set aflutter with the boys being a huge attraction for the single ladies in the audience...and many taken ones too!!

All in all, the night was a true success in every sense of the word and BIG thanks go out to our sponsors, especially Norths Leagues who not only supported us from day one but also gave us the venue free of charge to raise as much money as we could for the charities involved.

As for next year...a little break is needed before we make the decision!!!

Pink Hibiscus® Presents the “Rise and Shine” benefit for Cancer Research

We are all touched by cancer in some way, but when the recent story of Clare Oliver hit the media, we knew something more needed to be done.

This poor young woman is in the peak of her life and has only a few days to live thanks to the regular use of a solarium. The consultant at the tanning salon that she used to go to, recommended use of the solarium every 2 days “because that was the best way to get a tan…as quickly as possible”. There was no mention of the dangers of solarium tanning, none at all. So she took advantage of the discount offer (20 tans for the price of 10) and 2 years later found a strange lump that was diagnosed as a melanoma under her arm at the age of 22. She has now become a household name in her aim to have solariums regulated in Australia and has filled her final weeks with campaigning to increase awareness of the dangers of this ‘quick', yet extremely dangerous tanning option.

So many people have been touched by this gorgeous 26 year old and the Victorian Government has led the way in introducing legislation dubbed ‘Clare's Law' with third party audits and penalties for solarium operators who don't notify users of the danger or ban people under the age of 15 from using their facilities. Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott told the 7:30 Report “that it is important that we have nationally consistent regulation in this area.”

Let's work at spreading the word and get the entire country regulated in the same way. Make people aware that UV Radiation emitted via solariums can be up to 5 times as strong as the midday sun and there is a 75% increased risk of melanoma for people who use solariums before the age of 35! We don't lie in the sun at its strongest without protection, why then do people lie in a solarium with tanning accelerant when it is so dangerous? There ARE options and we need to stop the “it won't happen to me” belief.

Part of the reason that Pink Hibiscus® offers a spray tanning service is because you CAN still have a beautiful bronzed body without the danger involved with using a solarium. We have several clients who suffer from melanoma and can see the damage it does to them firsthand, emotionally and physically. Natalie is the same age as Clare and decided that we needed to pull together all of our friends and clients and use this momentum to organise a benefit dinner and show to raise much needed funds for cancer research – specifically melanoma research.

So on Wednesday October 24 th from 6:30pm we will be staging “Rise and Shine” with proceeds being split between The Cancer Council NSW and The Clare Oliver Melanoma Fund. What a few months this has been! We entered a submission into this inaugural awards ceremony back in June and received the word yesterday that we are a finalist in NSW & ACT in the Beauty Services Category! This awards ceremony is run by Precedent Productions and its major sponsors are the Australian Government (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources) and the Commonwealth Bank. Pink Hibiscus® Leads the Way In Safe Spray Tanning

We are constantly monitoring research in the area of spray tanning and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has released information on DHA (Dihydroxy-Acetone, the tanning agent in all spray tanning preparations). The FDA regulates useage of DHA in the United States but unfortunately there aren't such regulations in Australia .

DHA is safe to use externally but isn't recommended on the mucous membrane of our lips and around our eyes nor is it recommended to inhale in large doses.

Because of this finding, we recommend that our clients and therapist wear a mask whilst getting sprayed and also refrain from having their face tanned. The choice is up to you at the end of the day, but we advocate the safe use of spray tanning and believe that this is a safer option. As well as taking these steps, our ventilation system and air purifier is used as a way to clear the air of impurities and to ensure that it is more comfortable for our therapist and clients.

You can easily even out the colour of your face by using a darker foundation or bronzer. Pink Hibiscus® recommends Melli Cosmetics (www.mellicosmetics.com) which is used by celebrities and is receiving critical acclaim the nation over.

Jackie O - Entertainment Reporter on "The Nation"

Jackie O has spread her wings once more and is now the entertainment reporter on Nine's new tv show, "The Nation".

Commando Gets Tanned for “Where Are They Now?”

Regular Pink Hibiscus® tan devotee Geoff Barker is revisiting his Commando days this Sunday on ‘Where Are They Now'. Natalie spoke with Geoff earlier this week about how it felt to reunite with his old cast mates of ‘Gladiators'. “The funny thing was that we were all really nervous about seeing each other after so long but everyone slipped back in their old roles with each other really easily. It's very funny to watch!”

Natalie was very excited to get the chance to walk the red carpet with one of our faves, Bessie Bardot on Sunday evening for the MTV Australian Video Music Awards. The State Theatre was transformed into a pamper palace and we were very surprised at how quickly they actually achieved it! Within several hours you would never know that you were in a dingy dressing room 2 levels under the bustling city!

The celebrities and media seemed very impressed and many stopped by for a photo opportunity. Pink Hibiscus® was allowed into the world of reality tv last year for the new show, ‘Erotic Star'. Hosted and presented by Bessie Bardot with co-host, Geoff Barker, Erotic Star follows 10 exotic dancers as they compete for the sought-after title of Australia 's most talented Erotic Star. Each week contestants are judged on a number of physical and mental challenges with one person eliminated at the end of each episode. Think of it as ‘Australian Idol' meets ‘Big Brother' with exotic dancers! Tantalising really! We were asked to tan the dancers prior to one of their challenges and you will be able to see the results from March 24 th (and every Saturday) on Arena TV (Foxtel) at 11:30pm.

An Ultra Tanned Siobhan Parekh Graces Our Television Screens!

Siobhan is moving onwards and upwards in 2007 with several new print campaigns under her belt (look out for her on a billboard near you) and now the move to television. She will be hosting the ‘Spin Mobile Trivia Quiz' commercials on every television station in Australia as of this Friday the 2 nd February! She is looking bronzed and gorgeous as usual and we're looking forward to sharing her with the nation!
